Karen Devereaux Melillo, PhD, A-GNP-C, FAANP, FGSA, is a board-certified Adult-Gerontological Primary Care Nurse Practitioner. She is Professor Emerita, UMass Lowell’s Solomont School of Nursing (SSON), and the former Director, Center for Gerontology Research and Partnerships (2014-2021). She was Interim Dean (2014-2019) and Chair (2005-2014) for the SSON, before appointment as Special Advisor in the Office of the Provost, Fall 2019, where she led the Age-Friendly University (AFU) initiative. As Professor, she has taught at all academic program levels - BS, MS NP, DNP and PhD. Her major research focus is gerontological and geropsychiatric nursing, with an emphasis on the NP in caring for older adults in primary care and LTC settings. She has been PI or Co-I on federal, state, and private foundation grants to promote innovative models of clinical and interprofessional education at the baccalaureate and MS NP levels. She served nearly 10 years as PI on HRSA- and Mass. Department of Public Health-funded nursing workforce diversity projects to “Bring Diversity to Nursing”. She was Co-I on the HRSA-funded Advanced Nursing Education grant, “DNPs Caring for the Underserved”. She is currently Co-I and Co-PI on interdisciplinary Age Friendly Lowell (Tufts Health Plan Foundation, 2020-2023) and AFU (GSA/AARP/AGHE, 2021) grants. She was recognized with the National Hartford Center for Gerontological Nursing Excellence Distinguished Educator in Gerontological Nursing Award, 2018, and the AJN Book of the Year Award, 2012, for Geropsychiatric and Mental Health Nursing (Melillo & Houde, 2011, 2nd ed.). In 2020, Dr. Melillo received the Living Legend in Massachusetts Nursing Award by ANA-Massachusetts. She currently Chairs the Research Committee of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (2021-2023), is an Accreditation Evaluator for the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), and serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Gerontological Nursing and Journal of Professional Nursing.
