Dr. Thomas Gill is Professor of Medicine, Epidemiology, and Investigative Medicine and the Humana Foundation Professor of Geriatric Medicine at Yale University. He received his medical degree at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine and his housestaff training in Internal Medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he was Chief Resident. Dr. Gill received his research training in clinical epidemiology as a Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ) Clinical Scholar at Yale, and he joined the faculty in 1994 after completing an additional year as a geriatrics fellow. During the past 28 years, Dr. Gill has done groundbreaking research on the epidemiology and prevention of functional decline and disability, a challenging and complex problem of immense importance to older persons, their families and society. He directs the Center on Disability and Disabling Disorders, which conducts longitudinal studies and clinical trials to enhance the scientific knowledge base of the disablement process and to rigorously evaluate promising intervention strategies. Dr. Gill is the author of more than 370 published reports and the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including a MERIT Award and a Leadership Award from the National Institute on Aging. He holds several leadership positions at Yale, including Director of the Program on Aging and Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center and Director of the NIA-sponsored T32 postdoctoral training program in Geriatric Clinical Epidemiology and Aging-Related Research. He has successfully mentored dozens of junior faculty, fellows and other trainees towards successful careers in geriatrics and gerontology.
