Amy Vogelsmeier, PhD, RN, FAAN is an Associate Professor in the Sinclair School of Nursing, University of Missouri. She received her undergraduate degree in nursing from the University of Central Missouri in 1989, her master's degree as a gerontological clinical nurse specialist in 1997 and her PhD in nursing and health systems in 2008, both from the University of Missouri. Dr. Vogelsmeier has over 30 years of nursing experience in both acute and long term care with a primary practice focus in leadership and quality improvement. Dr. Vogelsmeier is a health services researcher with an emphasis on improving nursing home care delivery systems. Her research, which has been ongoing for nearly 20 years, includes a focus on the RN and APRN role as an influence to resident safety and on implementation to improve resident outcomes. She has led three studies in 20 nursing homes with more than 150 nurses to understand the unique contribution of RNs to improve resident safety. Most recently, she served as co-investigator and practice co-lead for the Missouri Quality Initiative, a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovations demonstration project funded over eight years (2012-2020) with the goal to reduce avoidable hospitalizations for nursing home residents using embedded APRNs to influence care delivery. Dr. Vogelsmeier is currently a multi-principal investigator on an Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ) funded study to develop knowledge and recommendations to improve nursing home management of respiratory infections outbreaks, such as COVID-19. She currently serves as a consultant and patient safety analyst for the Center for Patient Safety and serves as an expert advisory panel member for AHRQ’s Patient Safety Network (PSNetwork). Dr. Vogelsmeier has also served on panels with the American Academy of Nursing, the National Council State Boards of Nursing, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
