Associate Professor, Director of Palliative Care, Associate Director of Geriatrics
Northeast Ohio Medical University
Rootstown, Ohio, United States
In my 20 years of experience with the GECs, I have established an extensive network of academic and community-based colleagues across the nation which I will leverage to expand the scope and maximize the impact of the upcoming GWEP. My strong background in curricular design and innovative educational strategies for implementing geriatric and palliative care education will serve as the cornerstone of our proposed GWEP initiatives. As Director of the Office of Palliative Care, I oversee the palliative care curricula which spans all four years of medical education. I have been Associate Director of the Office of Geriatrics since 2005, developing curricula for faculty and health professions students throughout the NEOMED partnership. I am well entrenched in the model of interprofessional geriatrics and team-based approaches to care and a master trainer for TeamSTEPPS. Having a social work background has been a great asset in these roles. I co-authored two HRSA funded White Papers, one on bioterrorism and emergency preparedness for older adults and one on geriatric palliative care education. On the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations grant, I developed and implemented curricula for medical students, residents, attendings and community members on issues of family caregiving. I established and direct the Healer’s Art course at NEOMED which was originally developed by Rachel N. Remen, MD. This curriculum offers personal exploration of the values of service, healing relationships, and compassionate care. I also teach in the NICHE program to nurses at a local hospital. As Project Director for the GWEP at NEOMED, I have had full administrative responsibilities of grant management as well as a major role in educating over 2,500 student and professional learners through online didactics and simulations.
