Associate Professor and Program Director
University of Indianapolis
Indianapolis, Indiana, United States
I am an Associate Professor and Director of the Master of Science in Healthcare Management program at the University of Indianapolis and an adjunct graduate faculty member in Housing Management and Policy at the University of Georgia. My academic background is in Gerontology and Experimental Psychology. I received my PhD degree in Gerontology from the Graduate Center for Gerontology at University of Kentucky in 2006. Additionally, I have a graduate certificate in statistics with my doctoral degree and a minor in statistics with my master's degree.
My expertise is in aging and environment, particularly focused on where and how older people choose to live. My research has included aging-in-place, relocation decision-making, senior housing (including independent, assisted living, and continuing care retirement communities), use of home and community-based services; as well as stress, coping, and adaptation. While I have experience with advanced statistics and analyzing longitudinal datasets, I also use some qualitative approaches when the research question requires it.
I am co-PI on a project entitled the Gerontology Education Longitudinal Study (GELS), which began in 2006 and surveyed students, alumni, and faculty over time. Results of the study indicate students and graduates fall into distinct clusters of careers, one of which is applied work with older adults and agencies, ranging from local areas to international organizations. As such, we have learned that there are implications for the increased need for stewards of the discipline to translate research into practice, particularly in nursing, social work, and public health. Many of the programs are not equipped to prepare such scholars/practitioners and this area requires additional investigation, principally among alumni who are actively working in these sectors to identify areas in which specific training has, or would have, helped them in their careers.
