Addressing health disparities and equity in nursing homes is a pressing issue. In the 2022 State of the Union, President Biden made a call for increased nursing home regulation and staffing to address these issues. Access and health inequities vary along social and economic gradients. Looking at the social determinants of health is one avenue to address systemic inequities in the delivery of nursing home care. While there are various tools used to assess the social determinants of health, this symposium will focus on the Social Deprivation Index (SDI) that conceptualizes the communities’ level of munificence. The Social Deprivation Index (SDI) was created a decade ago and it quantifies the levels of disadvantage across counties and census tracks. The SDI is a composite measure of seven demographic characteristics collected in the American Community Survey (ACS): percent living in poverty, percent with less than 12 years of education, percent single parent household, percent living in rented housing unit, percent living in overcrowded housing unit, percent of households without a car, and percent non-employed adults under 65 years of age. Using this index, we can explore how nursing home performance can be influenced by the resources available in the community. This index is used to quantify the socio-economic variation in health outcomes. This symposium will explore SDI as it relates to COVID-19 incidence rates in nursing homes; nursing homes’ Five Star Quality Ratings; and nursing homes structure, processes, and quality of care.
