University of Kentucky HealthCare Lexington, Kentucky
The goal of this presentation is to discuss pain management strategies in patients with co-existing cancer and opioid use disorder (OUD). The presenters will highlight the challenges and ambiguity that exist surrounding medication selection, risk mitigation, monitoring and transitions of care for this vulnerable patient population. This presentation will examine three uniquely challenging patient cases and explore the different approaches that exist to ensure safe and appropriate treatment of pain in the setting of cancer and OUD.
Learning Objectives:
Understand the strategies for managing acute cancer pain in patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) who are already on a medication for OUD (MOUD)
Identify the different options of MOUD and understand how to choose an agent and safely initiate MOUD in a patient with cancer and pain
Examine the risks and benefits of using full opioid agonists in a patient with cancer and OUD for whom MOUD may no longer be appropriate
