“50-year network” is a term you inevitably hear when the benefits of an all fiber network are mentioned. What does a “50-year network” really mean though? How do you build a “50-year network” that can meet the bandwidth and connectivity requirements of over-the-horizon technologies over the next couple of decades? We are unlikely to see the current level of government investment again in our lifetimes so network plans must consider the needs of the future. Let’s not let rural smart cities be the next digital divide.
