BTES is among the select few utilities in the United States providing fiber optic technology to homes and businesses in their service area. The utility began providing Internet and cable television in 2005 and one year later added telephone services. Over 19,000 of BTES’ 34,000 electric customers now have fiber services.
BTES’ mission to exceed the expectations of the customer and community has led BTES to fully utilize this fiber system to enhance the electric service provided by the utility since 1945. The fiber system is used for automatic meter reading and power outage detection and reporting. It is also used to manage voltage and control peak electric load. BTES now provides some of the fastest Internet speeds available in the United States with speeds of ten Gigabits per second available to every business and home in our service area.
Under Browder’s leadership, BTES has been awarded the prestigious TNCPE Level 4 Excellence Award both in 1994 and 2012. In 2017, BTES became the first utility to be named a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award recipient.
