Dr. Maria Belalcazar is a tenured Associate Professor in the division of endocrinology and metabolism at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and a University of Texas Distinguished Teaching Professor. She completed her endocrinology fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine, where she trained in clinical and research lipidology. Dr. Belalcazar has had a long interest in cardiovascular disease prevention and in understanding the cardiometabolic effects of lifestyle interventions in people with diabetes. For years she was actively involved with the Look AHEAD trial, investigating the effects of lifestyle changes on markers of inflammation and thrombosis. She believes strongly in the importance of educating the patient on disease self-management and in the need of bringing together the benefits of lifestyle intervention and pharmacology to prevent the onset or progression of cardiovascular complications.
