Fire Chief Charlottesville Fire Department Charlottesville, Virginia
The objective of the presentation is to discuss the research findings related to the examination of diversity fatigue in the fire service. Over 150 fire service members participated in the study, which was conducted using a survey. While determining if there are specific factors influencing members within our profession, it was also necessary to note that fire service leaders are at the tip of the spear.
The study aimed to demonstrate the external validity of an adapted instrument and the likelihood of generalizing the findings specific to the fire services profession. The results were expected to provide insight into the need to support diversity initiatives and understand the impact of diversity efforts on the stakeholders in the fire service profession. The key-take aways related to meritocracy, diversity fatigue, and the association between sub-group members of the fire services profession and the findings related to their perspectives on diversity will be discussed.
