Building a Leadership Development Program focuses on the review of officer training programs developed cooperatively by several fire departments in Northern Virginia. A comprehensive review is provided for the Northern Virginia Leadership Development Institute that offers annual company and command officer development courses delivered as a weeklong residency-based program. These unique courses focus on leading employees, interacting with shift personnel, and dealing with the challenging scenarios faced by officers during non-incident related activities. This interactive class provides an overview of program development to include planning through implementation and evaluation. Key highlights include curriculum development, staff selection and responsibilities, presenter selection, student selection, and lessons learned.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this session, the participant will understand how to develop a successful region-wide company and command officer leadership development program to include planning, preparation, delivery, and the after action review.

Many officer development programs focus most efforts on operational performance. Upon completion of this session, the participant will understand there is a greater need for officer development from an employee development and counseling perspective.
