Active Shooter events have been a part of our response plans for many years. However many departments throw together a plan and set it on a shelf. How often are you having discussions on your plan internally and with your cooperators? One of the presenters will discuss the process by which police and fire departments in his community were able to develop policies that worked to integrate the responses needed for this type of event and the pitfalls noted through exercises. We will discuss various response plans for active shooter events in schools. We will then discuss a real-world event where one of the presenters was intimately involved with the incident while his daughter was in the school. An interactive discussion on the lessons learned from the event, plans that worked, along with those that did not, as well as the personal aspect of what we do, will occur with participants. Attendees will come away with a different perception of active shooter events and how to prepare for them.
