Bernard Khor is currently an Assistant Member of the Benaroya Research Institute in Seattle, Washington, an Affiliate Assistant Professor at the University of Washington, and Associate Medical Director of Bloodworks Northwest. The Khor lab focuses on discovering and understanding novel disease-relevant pathways that regulate the balance between inflammation and tolerance, taking an integrative and collaborative multimodal approach in both humans and model systems. A major focus of the lab is how immune dysregulation in people with Down syndrome predisposes to immune aging and autoimmunity. Recent novel work demonstrates advanced immune aging in people with Down syndrome. The lab has also demonstrated that people with Down syndrome have an immune architecture that appears poised for autoimmunity, driven by mechanisms independent of aging. Targeted mechanistic targets include understanding how the DS-relevant kinase Dyrk1A regulates Th17/Treg differentiation with potential therapeutic relevance.
