Post-doctorate Fellow
University of Florida Diabetes Institute
Gainesville, Florida, United States
Melanie Shapiro, PhD, is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Florida Diabetes Institute. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree specialized in Cell Biology & Molecular Genetics from the University of Maryland in 2015. Melanie joined the laboratories of Drs. Mark Atkinson and Todd Brusko as a graduate student in the Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences Program and completed her PhD in Immunology and Microbiology in 2020. Her thesis work was focused on the impacts of insulin-like growth factors (IGF) on T cell biology as well as their use as biomarkers to predict T1D. She received a Predoctoral Individual National Research Service Award from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to support this work. In addition, she characterized the CD226 knockout non-obese diabetic (NOD) mouse model as partially protective from disease onset as a consequence of improved central and peripheral tolerance. Dr. Shapiro is currently a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Todd Brusko's laboratory and her work is focused on the use of precision medicine genotyping microarray data to investigate the role of T1D risk loci in promoting immune and pancreatic phenotypes associated with T1D pathogenesis. She is also interested in loci modulating individual response to therapeutics for suspension and/or prevention of T1D development. Dr. Shapiro has received awards from Diabetes Research Connection in addition to the JDRF Postdoctoral Fellowship.
