Flight Nurse Practitioner

Paula Mickan has been working for Cleveland Metro Life Flight for the past 10 and a half years. During this time, she had a desire to go back to school to work on her master’s degree and become an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. After completing this program, she stayed with same hospital to work as a nurse practitioner with the departments of neurocritical care and neurosurgery. This experience included an in-depth assessment of the neurosurgical patient and review of the non-contrasted CT scan of the brain. Bedside skills included central lines, arterial lines and placements of ICP monitors and EVD drains. This hands-on experience working with the department of neurosciences prepared and equipped her better to care for the patient with a traumatic brain injury. After 17 months with this department, Paula was able to return to her passion in caring for patients in the air medical transport industry as a full time Flight Nurse Practitioner.
