Present in trace amounts in the foods we eat and the water we drink, lithium is a critical nutrient for many aspects of human physiology. Erroneously, many people today continue to think of lithium as a high-dose drug. As a naturally occurring mineral, however, lithium can be utilized at nutritional doses so low that they mimic trace lithium intakes derived from the food chain. Lithium has profound effects on brain function and behavior, something that has been confirmed time and again by epidemiologic, clinical, experimental, and comparative studies. Nutritional lithium has the groundbreaking potential to address two of the most significant public health crises facing our community – the prevention of Alzheimer’s and the prevention of suicide.
