Ecology technicians are usually the backbone of their team and play a significant role in conducting research projects and/or monitoring and evaluating and prescribing treatments to meet the goals of ecosystem management. An effective technician is proficient in field and lab skills, equipment handling and safety, computer, and record keeping. A well-rounded education with an ecology degree and coursework emphasis on applied ecology is required by employers who seek technicians. Adaptability, flexibility, organization, and communication skills are highly desired. An internship or experience (volunteer or paid) with a natural resource agency or a lab, and their endorsement, will make an ecology graduate highly competitive in ecology-based employment and career.
