Graduate students are increasingly employed in fields outside of academia, requiring skills and experience not garnered from traditional degree programs. Without good advice and well-developed networks, students generally hone “non-traditional” academic skills like science communication and engagement through trial-and-error. Here I share numerous strategies that graduate students can incorporate science communication and engagement into their education. I will also guide how academic institutions could support, encourage, and enable students to develop science communication and engagement skills; and the benefits of integrating them into their graduate programs.
