Session Description: This short course will introduce the development and analysis of matrix models and integral projection models using the R package lefko3, which is intended to serve as a full working environment for the development and analysis of such models. The package offers the benefits of ultra-fast computation and superior memory handling, making it possible to create extremely large-format matrix models and IPMs.
The session will be divided into 4 45-min parts:
1) Intro to MPMs and IPMs, including the impacts of individual history, and to using R for projection analysis 2) Running standard deterministic analyses with MPMs and IPMs 3) Environmental and demographic stochasticity, and conservation-oriented risk assessment 4) Density dependence and general projection
This workshop will particularly be focused on graduate students interested in developing their analytical skills in a scientific programming environment. Though some familiarity with R is helpful, it will not be required for the course, as the first portion will introduce basic R knowledge. Attendees should have installed the latest versions of R and RStudio, and should also have installed the R packages rmarkdown, markdown, and lefko3, as well as any dependencies.
