Dr. Avila is a plant evolutionary ecologist who grew up in Mexico City, and obtained his B. Sc. degree in biology (1991) at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). He worked as Research Assistant at Centro (now Instituto) de Ecología, UNAM for almost two years, and left to undertake his Ph.D. in Biology at Penn State University (2000). Dr. Avila has published 20 peer-reviewed papers and four book chapters, teaches courses in botany, evolution and ecology, and is a member of the Canadian Society for Ecology and Evolution, the Ecological Society of America, and the Sociedad Científica Ecológica de México.
