Senator Galvez is an environmental engineer, a former professor, an expert in pollution and an independent Senator for Quebec who uses science to inform legislation. In 2016, Galvez was appointed as an independent Senator for Quebec where she chaired the Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources from 2017 to 2019 and is the President of the Parliamentary Network on Climate Change of ParlAmericas.
All aspects of climate change are a priority for her work in Parliament. In 2021, Galvez introduced a Motion in the Senate of Canada to declare a national climate emergency and pursue efforts to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Senator Galvez obtained a doctorate in environmental engineering from McGill University in Montreal. She is a former professor at Laval University in Quebec and a former chair of the university’s Civil and Water Engineering department. Galvez’s areas of expertise include water and wastewater treatment processes, integrated watershed management, sustainable development, municipal and hazardous waste management, soil rehabilitation studies, circular economy, environmental impacts assessment and risk analysis. Galvez is a member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec, a Fellow of Engineers Canada, and a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering.
