The Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network is composed of 28 sites funded by the National Science Foundation to conduct fundamental research on ecological patterns, processes, and interactions within and among major ecosystems of the U.S. and beyond. More than 1500 scientists at LTER sites are collectively engaged and dedicated to interdisciplinary long-term research in environmental science. Our primary mission is to use long-term observations and experiments to generate and test ecological theory at local to regional scales. The mission of the Environmental Data Initiative is to preserve environmental data for open and reproducible science, to promote synthesis across space and time, and to aid in the assessment of environmental change and its consequences.
