Land Acknowledgement and Thanksgiving Address

The 2022 Ecological Society of America’s Annual Meeting is being held on the unceded lands where the City of Montreal in Quebec, Canada sits. “Montreal” in the Kanien’kéha (Mohawk) language is known as Tiohti:áke. It is also known as Mooniyang in Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe language (also Ojibwa, Ojibway and Chippewa who are part of the Anishinaabeg peoples). The Kanien’kéha Nation is eastern most member tribe of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy.

The Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabeg peoples have been tied to the island of Montreal since time immemorial. Tiohti:áke (Montreal) is traditionally known as a gathering place for diverse Indigenous peoples to come together.

We encourage you to refer to this link and this link for additional information for land acknowledgements, phonetic pronunciations and to learn more about the Land and Peoples of Tiohtià:ke / Montreal.

The land acknowledgement is done by Otsi’tsakèn:ra (Charles Patton). He is a respected elder of the Kanien’keha:ka community of Kahnawa:ke, on the south shore of Otsira:ke (Hochelaga/Montreal) - the northern section of Kanien’keha:ka ancestral territory.

Elder Otsi’tsakèn:ra has graciously offered to us the full traditional Ohenten Kariwatekwen or Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving Address. We encourage all to listen and learn more about the Haudenosaunee nations.
