Assistant Medical Director St Louis Fire Department St Louis, Missouri
Description: We have all heard the saying air goes in and out and blood goes round and round. This is true in the simplest form when describing the function of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. However, this is a vast over simplification. The cardiovascular and respiratory systems are two organ systems that account for a large number of EMS calls. During this presentation, the physiology of how these 2 systems work will be covered in a manner that will allow for practical application. Additionally, pathophysiology of when these systems are no longer working correctly will be presented in an interactive case-based format which will allow for the EMT to apply both physiology and pathophysiology in real world context.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the cardiovascular system and how it functions to support the body
Describe the respiratory system and how it functions to support the body
Demonstrate how abnormalities in the physiology of the cardiovascular and respiratory system manifest as disease
