Dr. Kenneth Scheppke is dual board-certified in the fields of emergency medicine and EMS. He currently serves as Deputy Secretary for Health having previously served as the State EMS Medical Director for the Florida Department of Health as well as the Chief Medical Officer for the Florida Division of Emergency Management. He is a well-known leader and educator in EMS having received several National EMS awards for innovation, education, research and leadership including the 2017 JEMS EMS Innovator of the Year Award, the 2020 US and International Gathering of Eagles Educator of the Year Award, the 2020 and 2021 Society of Critical Care Medicine Star Research Achievement Awards, and the 2021 NAEMT National EMS Medical Director of the Year Award. In this past year he has been focused on innovative solutions to reduce the burden of the COVID-19 pandemic and to expand the role of EMS in mitigating this and future health care disasters as well as to improve health care system access and resiliency. In addition to his medical expertise, Dr. Scheppke is an instrument rated private pilot who routinely volunteers to fly animals (who are at risk for euthanasia) to safe foster and non-kill shelters pending their adoption. He also flies in times of disaster such as in the post landfall aftermath of hurricanes Irma, Michael and Dorian, helping to deliver critical relief supplies when ground transportation was not available.
