Shyretha (Shy) Brown, Ph.D. is a Senior Scientist at the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI) with expertise in biochemistry and exercise physiology research. Her primary roles at GSSI include lead biochemist, protocol development, and data collection for the Research Program. Dr. Shy came to GSSI from Tennessee State University (TSU) where she earned a doctorate in Biological Sciences. While at TSU, she conducted immunology and cancer biology-related research that focused on the effects of butyltin exposures on expression of interleukin 1 beta and interleukin 6 in human immune cells. Prior to TSU, she spent time at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory as a Post-Bachelors Research Associate where she gained experience in the areas of visual analytics and characterization of cellular signaling. Dr. Shy earned her BS at Jackson State University where she engaged in bioinformatics research. Aside from research, Dr. Shy founded Building Bridges, Inc., which is non-profit organization designed to expose, equip, and empower young girls to pursue STEM through self-awareness education.
