Before joining the University of Lausanne in August 2020, where he is Professor of Antidoping Sciences and Director of the REDs (Research and Expertise in anti-Doping sciences), he has worked in the technical department of the Italian Air Force (1987-1991) and as Professor at the “Sapienza” University of Rome (1991-2020). In 1993-1994 he was visiting scholar at the Department of Physiology of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (Philadelphia, USA). Since 1998 he is also the Scientific Director of the Italian antidoping laboratory accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). He directed the antidoping laboratory for the Torino 2006 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, and in the last 20 years he was regularly appointed as international expert on the occasion of major International Sport Events. He is fellow member of the WAADS (World Association of Anti-Doping Scientists), and served as a member of the WADA Laboratory Expert Group (2007-2008) and of the WADA List Expert Group (2014-2015). He is member of the Medical and Antidoping Commission and of the Disciplinary Commission of the International Committee for the Mediterranean Games (ICMG). He is also a member of the “Ad hoc” Group of experts on the development of the anti-doping laboratory network in the States Parties” (T-DO Lab AHG) of the Council of Europe
He has authored over 350 scientific articles, monographs, and conference proceedings in different fields of analytical biochemistry, drug metabolism, and forensic toxicology.
