Dr. Ngoc Hoang is currently a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She received her Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center with Professor Jon Hosler. Her Ph.D. thesis was about investigating the role of hypoxia-induced gene domain 1 protein in yeast mitochondria. She found that these proteins are necessary to maintain mitochondrial membrane potential, which is required for ATP synthase working. During her Ph.D., she was responsible for establishing protocols for isolating mitochondria from yeast, assays for measuring coupled respiration in intact mitochondria, assays for whole chain electron transfer in broken mitochondria, and assays of the individual electron transfer complexes of oxidative phosphorylation. In addition, she obtained an M.S. degree in Biochemistry in 2010 and an M.D. degree in 2006 in Vietnam. Her professional training as a medical doctor provided her with a broad knowledge of human physiology and pathophysiology. In May 2020, she joined Dr. Kristin Edwards’s lab as a postdoctoral research fellow and started a new project to study the role of mitochondria and sex differences in the development of inflammatory bowel diseases.
