John Aaron Howell is a 5th year neuroscience PhD candidate at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC). He completed his Bachelor of Arts in biochemistry at the University of Mississippi in 2017, where he did neuroscience research studying sexual differentiation of the zebra finch song system. Since starting at UMMC, he has been working with Dr. Gene Bidwell on a drug development project creating new protein drugs for treating neuroinflammation following ischemic stroke. This project has provided John Aaron with training for many skills including molecular cloning, DNA/RNA isolation from tissue, qPCR, cell culture, in vivo biodistribution/pharmacokinetics assessment, and surgical skills like the middle cerebral artery occlusion model of ischemic stroke, among others.
John Aaron is a Graduate Student Ambassador for the American Physiological Society (APS) and has also received the APS CNS Section Research Recognition Award. He is also a Society for Neuroscience (SfN) - Neuroscience Scholars Program Associate and recipient of the SfN Trainee Professional Development Award.
John Aaron is anticipated to finish his PhD in the spring of 2023, and he is currently seeking potential postdoctoral fellowship opportunities.
