Julia Lo Cascio is a senior at Georgetown University, working under Blythe D. Shepard, PhD. Her past experience in the Shepard Laboratory has included localization studies of Olfactory Receptor 57 (Olfr57) human orthologs; live animal research training via the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science; quantification and analysis of murine MRI images of the TallyHo diabetic model strain; and characterization of the AML-12 liver cell line. For her current thesis work concerning the mechanism of successful Type 1 diabetes induction in female mice, she received a Summer Mentored Undergraduate Research Fellowship grant from Georgetown University.
During her time at Georgetown, Julia is completing a major in Human Science and a minor in Theater. She is currently serving as the co-chair of the Georgetown University Undergraduate Research Conference and previously worked as a Teaching Assistant for Genetics. She is also a certified Emergency Medical Technician and works as a Clinical Volunteer at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Upon graduation in May, Julia will be pursuing her medical degree at the New York University Long Island School of Medicine, on the Pediatrics Track.
