John S. Lazo, Ph.D. is currently the Chief Scientific Officer of KeViRx, Inc. He also is the Harrison Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and the Allegheny Foundation Professor Emeritus in the Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology at the University of Pittsburgh. From 2004 until 2010 he was the founding Director of the University of Pittsburgh Drug Discovery Institute.
His primary research interests are in molecular pharmacology and drug discovery with a special interest in anticancer drugs and protein tyrosine phosphatases. Professor Lazo has been the recipient of a number of awards and honors including: elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; NIH Research Career Development Award; National Cancer Research Institute Fellowship (Japan); ASPET-Astellas Award in Translational Pharmacology; member of the Board of Directors of the American Association for Cancer Research; member of the Board of Publication Trustees and President of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics; member of the International Advisory Board of the Cancer Research & Therapeutic Innovation (Toulouse, France); member of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History Board; and Chairman of the Council for Extramural Grants of the American Cancer Society. He is currently on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, the Cure Alzheimer’s Foundation, Celator Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and the Cancer Molecular Therapeutics Association. He is a Senior Editor of Molecular Cancer Therapeutics. At the University of Virginia he is on the Advisory Board of the Coulter Foundation, iLab, and the Licensing and Venture Group.
Professor Lazo graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry and a PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Michigan. He received postdoctoral training at Yale University and was a member of the University’s pharmacology faculty. Professor Lazo served as a Corporate Associate at Johnson & Johnson between 2002-2005. He has co-authored 11 books, published more than 340 scientific articles and reviews, holds eleven US issued patents, and has trained 13 PhD students and 31 postdoctoral fellows.
