Lindsey Richelle Fernandez Backman graduated summa cum laude with her B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Florida in 2015. Backman is a Ph.D. candidate in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Department of Chemistry where she is performing her graduate work in Prof. Cathy Drennan's lab. Backman's work has focused on structurally and characterizing new glycyl radical enzymes abundant in the human gut microbiome. Backman is a recipient of a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Gilliam Fellowship, a National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) fellowship, and the MIT Hugh Hampton Young Fellowship. She is interested in exploring chemical bases for bacterial competition in the human microbiome during her academic career.
