This installment of the annual medical physiology refresher series will provide a comprehensive current overview of water homeostasis suitable for physiology educators, clinicians, and students of physiology alike. These lectures, delivered by leading experts in the field, will review the fundamental physiological mechanisms underlying the normal regulation of body fluid osmolality and water balance, as well as representative examples of clinical conditions characterized by disrupted water homeostasis. These traditional physiological and pathophysiological perspectives of water balance will also be complemented by specific examples of sex differences - representing an emerging area of interest in the field - and a broad overview of the evolution and comparative physiology of water handling in diverse species that will serve to illustrate the fundamental biological and clinical importance of these highly conserved homeostatic mechanisms.
