Introduction: In this talk Dr. Rutherford frames the dynamic intrauterine environment and its long term and intergenerational implications for development and health as a metaphor for safe, inclusive professional environments. She draws on her work on pregnancy, the placenta, and the developmental origins of pregnancy outcomes in the common marmoset monkey, as well as the landmark Survey of Academic Fieldwork Experiences (SAFE) study and her own experiences as mentee and mentor to argue that personal and professional thriving are inextricably interconnected to early developmental environments.
