Following my acceptance into University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) in the Curriculum in Toxicology and Environmental Medicine I joined the lab of Drs. Robert Maile and Bruce Cairns within the Department of Surgery. Drs. Robert Maile and Bruce Cairns, an immunologist and burn surgeon respectively, have been studying burn trauma for over 20 years, with their research driving the field and closing the knowledge gap within this trauma. UNC’s Curriculum in Toxicology and Environmental Medicine was the ideal choice due to the program’s success and its focus to conduct impactful translational research. My dissertation project focuses on studying extracellular vesicles and understanding their role in the immune dysfunction following burn trauma. We believe that the extracellular vesicles, more specifically microvesicles can regulate immune and other signaling processes of various cells within the body. This project incorporates a variety of techniques; both newer techniques and techniques I obtained in my undergraduate studies. In addition, this research has very important therapeutic implications in multiple diseases and is the foundation to my doctoral research.
I do not have any relevant financial / non-financial relationships with any proprietary interests.
