Jeffrey E. Carter, MD serves as an associate professor of surgery at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center and medical director at University Medical Center Burn Center in New Orleans- Louisiana's only verified burn and trauma center. Prior to moving to New Orleans, he served on faculty at Wake Forest University where he was the associate director of the Wake Health Burn Center and co-founder/medical director of the Wake Forest University Center for Experiential and Applied Learning.
He graduated first in his class at East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine and pursued general surgery residency at Wake Forest University with an additional research fellowship in surgical education. As a junior resident, he co-founded the Center for Experiential and Applied Learning after raising $3.5 million to build the comprehensive simulation lab for team-based education which achieved national recognition.
He continued his training at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill with a fellowship in trauma/surgical critical care followed by a third fellowship in burn surgery where he received the Womack Scholar Award. In 2009, his research won the ABA Moyer Award after examining burn referral patterns. He has continued his research efforts in burn education, prehospital/disaster preparedness/response, workforce/healthcare economics, and technologies that transform burn care. His current funding includes BARDA, DHA, and NIH. He has won numerous teaching awards and serves as national faculty for the ABA ABLS course and course director for the Advanced Burn Care course. In 2019 he received the Healthcare Hero award from his community leaders and in 2020 he was commissioned by the governor after demonstrating a 50% reduction in burn mortality for the region. He currently serves as a board member for the ABA and the Louisiana Emergency Response Network. His spare time is spent with his loving family and serving his community.
