Karla Klas, BSN, RN, CCRP manages the University of Michigan Trauma Burn Center’s nationally acclaimed community and family-centered injury prevention programs. A celebrated educator, speaker, and author, Karla’s 30-year background in burn/trauma critical care nursing, research, public education, mentoring, professional development training, program management, process improvement, curriculum development, community risk reduction, and injury prevention has produced numerous medical journal publications, textbook chapters, training modules, and grant awards. She holds multiple specialty certifications and has advanced training in several specialty topics, such as: Drug Endangered Children Response, Forensic Interviewing in Children, Child Abuse Identification, Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative on Research, Screening-Brief Intervention-Referral to Treatment (SBIRT), Motivational Interviewing, National Incident Management System, Advanced Burn Life Support, Stop the Bleed, CarFit, Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses, and others. She is a FEMA/National Fire Academy Professional Instructor. Karla has attained leadership appointments to several national and regional committees devoted to injury control. Her work has received numerous accolades, including the MI Fire Inspectors Society Public Educator of the Year Award, City of Detroit Community Service Award, Ann Arbor Public Schools Excellence in Mentoring, and the American Burn Association Burn Prevention Award. Karla speaks throughout the nation on trauma/burn injuries, safety, injury prevention, and youth firesetting. Audiences commend Karla’s ability to dynamically present cutting-edge information with clarity, humor, and insight into everyday application. In her spare time, she volunteers in survivor support programs, mentors at-risk youth, writes children’s books, and enjoys all kinds of outdoor adventures with her family.
