Walter Chan, MD, MPH, FACG, is the Director of the Center for Gastrointestinal Motility and Director of Clinical Research Education at the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endoscopy at Brigham and Women's Hospital. He is also Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He completed medical school and residency training in internal medicine at Washington University School of Medicine, followed by gastroenterology fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He received his MPH in clinical effectiveness from the Harvard School of Public Health. He is a gastroenterologist with clinical and research focus in esophageal and gastrointestinal motility disorders. Dr. Chan currently directs the Gastrointestinal Motility and Physiology Laboratory, located in the Endoscopy Center at Brigham and Women's Hospital. His main clinical research interests center around gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and its extraesophageal manifestations, such as pulmonary complications, lung transplantation outcomes, and laryngopharyngeal relfux. He is also actively engaged in studies in the diagnosis and management of eosinophilic esophagitis, functional gastrointestinal disorders, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, and anorectal/pelvic floor dysfunction. Dr. Chan has also been actively engaged in healthcare social media, with a research program studying the impact of social media use in gastroenterology and academia. He has served as the Social Media Editor of the American Journal of Gastroenterology and the Chair of the Research Committee of the Association of Healthcare Social Media.
