Karen is Professor and Director for the Institute of Skin Integrity and Infection Prevention, University of Huddersfield. Currently she is a member of the National Wound Care Strategy (NHS England) and a member of the All-Parliamentary Committee for Venous and Vascular Disease (UK). Karen completed her BA (Economics and Social Studies) and MA in Health Service Management at the University of Manchester before completing her PhD at the University of Salford. Her clinical background is in orthopaedics and tissue viability. She has over 30 years’ experience in both clinical practice and academia. Her research interests focus on skin integrity, infection prevention, management of surgical site complications and improving access to education for all health care professionals and service users. She is widely published (in excess of 140 papers) and has edited 2 text books. She is Visiting Professor, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia, Royal College of Surgeons, Dublin and Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. She is elected chair of the International Wound Infection Institute, Director for ISTAP (Europe) and Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology.
