Dr. Hirokuni Arai is the Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Tokyo Medical and Dental University. He completed his general surgery training and his cardiothoracic fellowship training at Tokyo Medical and Dental University and its affiliated hospitals. From1989 to 1991, he was a Research Fellow in Department of Surgery at St. Louis University, in St. Louis, USA, under Professor D. Glenn Pennington. From 1994 to 2000, he was a Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Hokushin General Hospital, in Nagano, Japan. Since 2007, he has been current position.
His specialties include off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB), mitral valve repair and ventricular assist device. He invented various surgical devices mostly related to OPCAB and obtained over 20 Patents. He has contributed to more than 100 original articles in peer-reviewed journals and given over 200 invited lectures at regional and international conferences. He is also dedicated to international teaching especially in Asia, such as organizing annual OPCAB Workshop in Thailand.
He is currently Society President of Japanese Association for Coronary Artery Surgery (JACAS), Congress president of Japanese Association for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (J-MICS 2019), Congress President of Japanese Society for Heart Valve Disease 2019 and immediate past Congress President of Japanese Association for Thoracic Surgery (JATS 2018).
