John M. Byrne, D.O., FACP is the Director of Medical and Dental Education at the VA Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA), in Washington, D.C., joining the OAA in January 2021. In this role, Dr. Byrne oversees graduate medical education (GME), undergraduate medical education and dental education in VA facilities across the nation including 11,500 funded GME positions to which 70,000 residents rotate annually.
Over the previous 22 years, Dr. Byrne served as the Associate Chief of Staff for Education (Designated Education Officer or DEO) at the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System (VALLHCS) and also served as Academic Officer for the Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 22, overseeing and coordinating the activities of 7 DEOs at network facilities. At VALLHCS, Dr. Byrne also served as the Chief Health Informatics Officer, overseeing a staff of 8 Clinical Application Coordinators and contributing the to the development of information technology innovations through 8 funded grants. He is a Professor of Medicine at Loma Linda University School of Medicine.
Dr. Byrne completed an internal medicine residency at Loma Linda University Health (LLUH) in 1992 and was a chief resident at the VA, 1992 to 1993. He joined the staff of the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System (VALLHCS) where he worked as a general internist in the inpatient and outpatient settings. . He also served as the Associate Program Director of the LLUH Internal Medicine Residency and Chief of the General Internal Medicine Section at VALLHCS from 1995 to 1999.
