VA/VHA
Erie, Pennsylvania, United States
Danine Smola, BSMT, Lean BB, is a Systems Redesign and Improvement Coordinator at the Erie VA Medical Center. She received her Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from the State University of New York at Fredonia in 1993 and has been an employee at the Erie VA Medical Center for 28 years. Her first 23 years were spent in Pathology & Laboratory Medicine as a Certified Medical Technologist. In 2016, Mrs. Smola accepted a position as a Systems Redesign and Improvement Coordinator where she earned her Lean Black Belt certification. She was first introduced to the High Reliability Organization (HRO) concept when the Erie facility was identified by VISN 4 as an HRO Lead site in the Spring of 2019. These concepts were akin to the grassroot efforts the Erie VA uses to educate, empower, and engage all its staff to improve their processes, ultimately improving the Veteran Experience.
