Commander Wong-Lopez is a native of California. He completed a bachelor’s degree at Stanford University with departmental honors in Human Biology and a minor in Archaeology. He completed a Doctor of Medicine degree at Oregon Health & Science University and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in 2007. He completed an internship in General Surgery at Bethesda National Naval Medical Center.
He served as a General Medical Officer at NBHC Groton, CT, and at Marine Wing Support Squadron 271, aboard Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, NC. In 2011 he deployed to Camp Bastion, Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 40. In 2012 he was designated a Naval Flight Surgeon at NAS Pensacola, FL. He was the US Naval Academy’s Commissioning Medical Officer while at NHC Annapolis, MD. During residency in Family Medicine at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital in Alexandria, VA, he conducted a global health engagement with a partner military hospital in El Salvador. At USNMRTC Yokosuka, Japan, he was Department Head of Family Medicine, and deployed aboard USNS Comfort to 12 Central/South American countries in 2019.
He is a board-certified Family Medicine physician with clinical interests in women’s health and operational medicine. He came aboard USNMRTC Rota in August 2020, where he is the Director for Expeditionary Medicine. He led the hospital’s efforts in COVID mass vaccination and in Operation Allies Refuge/Welcome for Afghan evacuees.
CDR Wong-Lopez’s personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), and several unit and operational awards.
