Clinical Laboratory Scientist
Public Health Service
Butner, North Carolina, United States
My name is LCDR Katrina Redman. I am a commissioned officer in the United States Public Health Service (USPHS), a Medical Technologist (ASCP), and a Certified Specialist in Point-Of-Care Testing (AACC). I also have a Master of Divinity in Community Chaplaincy. I am an endorsed Chaplain with the Baptist General Convention of Texas (BGCT), and a current chaplain intern with the Durham Veteran's Administration Healthcare Systems. I have been working in the Laboratory for 18 years. I serve as a generalist in a high complexity medical reference laboratory performing approximately 2.6 million tests annually. I am the Lead Technical Expert for Transfusion Services and also for Point-of-Care Testing at my assigned agency.
My passion is to promote spiritual wellness, and my goal is to serve as a Chaplain for the USPHS. Spirituality is an essential component of resilience. Throughout a lifetime the average individual will be exposed to many minor traumas and over half of the population in America will be exposed to a catastrophic stress event in their life. The need to promote and advance any strategy for resilience is crucial to our nation's health. It is especially crucial for our healthcare providers. The officers of the USPHS are first responders and they experience trauma at a more significant rate than the average citizen. The need for trained officers to come alongside our healthcare professionals and recognize, encourage, and support their spiritual needs is needed now more than ever. Burnout rates during the pandemic have risen significantly and our officers are at risk. The USPHS does not currently have a chaplaincy, but there is hope that one will be developed in the future. In the meantime, I will continue to champion the value of spiritual wellness and stand in this gap for our nation.
