Dr. Jose Edwin Nieves is a Physician with the U.S. Army at Medical Detachment (MEDDAC) at Fort Eustis, Virginia. He is also Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. Throughout his career, Dr. Nieves supervises and has supervised graduate and undergraduate medical trainees from Virginia Commonwealth University Medical School, Eastern Virginia Medical School, United States Navy and the Uniformed Health Services University of the Health Sciences. Dr. Nieves served as Associate Chief of Staff for Education and Research at the Hampton Veterans Health Administration Medical Center in Hampton VA until 2011.
He is a reviewer for several medical journals and has published and presented medical articles and abstracts in peer reviewed journals, periodicals and national medical meetings.
Dr. Nieves is a frequent contributor and researcher for to the Puerto Rico Office of Historic Preservation, the National Park Service South East Region, the U.S. National Archives and the U.S. Army Medical Department Office of Medical History, Fort Sam Houston and the U.S. Army Transportation Museum, Fort Eustis, VA.
He has published on Medical Military History topics and Naval Military History topics primarily on the late 19th, early 20th century periods.
Dr. Nieves completed several missions interviewing and recording the experiences of Coast Guard Forces during the historic 2017 natural disaster season. He has received several commendations from the Coast Guard, Army and other civilian organizations for his medical and civic contributions. Dr. Nieves is a Past President of the Psychiatric Society of Virginia and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
