Commander David A. Paz assumed his current position as U.S. Naval Hospital Rota Spain’s Chief Medical Officer in May 2019.
A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, CDR Paz attended the U.S. Naval Academy and graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was selected for the Special Operations community and completed training at the Navy Diving and Salvage Training Center in January 2000, successfully graduating from Basic Diving Officer and several Deep Sea Diving and Salvage courses. He then completed Surface Warfare Officer School at Newport, Rhode Island. He reported aboard the USS SAFEGUARD (ARS-50) at Sasebo, Japan as Diving and Operations Officer. While forward deployed to Japan, he applied and was selected for the Health Professions Scholarship Program to attend the University of Wisconsin Medical School. After graduation with a Doctor of Medicine degree in 2006, he was selected for Navy Active Duty Delay for Specialists program for Radiology and completed a 1-year transitional internship at St. Luke’s Medical Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He completed Diagnostic Radiology residency at the University of California San Diego, obtaining board certification in 2011.
CDR Paz served at Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) as a Diagnostic Radiologist and Radiology Residency Assistant Program Director until 2014, during which he deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, serving as Diagnostic Radiologist and Director, Clinical Support Services at the NATO Role 3 Multinational Medical Unit, Kandahar Afghanistan. He then transferred and served as Radiology Department Head at U.S. Naval Hospital Naples, Italy from 2014-2016. CDR Paz was selected from a highly competitive field to be the Navy Medicine West Chief Medical Informatics Officer, serving from 2016 to 2019. Concurrently, he provided clinical services as a staff radiologist at NMCSD while also completing the rigorous Naval Post-Graduate School Executive Master of Business Administration, graduating September 2018.
