Literacy & Innovation Specialist
Oxford County Library
Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada
My name is Shannon Van Herzele and I am the Literacy & Innovation Specialist at the Ingersoll branch of the Oxford County Library system in Southwestern Ontario. I completed my Bachelor of Education in the Primary-Junior division at Nipissing University, a Bachelor of Arts and English minor from Wilfrid Laurier University, and went on to complete the Library Technician program at Conestoga College and feel at home in the library community. I have worked within the Oxford County Library system for three and a half years and have had the opportunity to grow from where I started as a Page in a rural branch, to a Public Service Clerk at a large branch, to the Programming Services Coordinator, and now my current role. Summer Reading Club was one of the first large tasks to complete in my programming position and the pandemic changed everything I had prepared for. Flexibility, innovation, and thinking beyond traditional Summer Reading Club format sparked a virtual Summer Reading Club video series in 2020 that was refined and since developed into the fully virtual 2021 Library Olympics. Looking forward to 2022 and beyond, balancing the need for virtual programming to maintain the library's online presence and fulfilling in-person programming needs is at the forefront of my professional goals. In my spare time, you can find me listening to true crime podcasts and working on my personal reading list under the close supervision of my cat!
