Dr. Cookson is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, and holds a BA with high honors in Journalism (1984). He received his MD with high honors from the OU's College of Medicine (1988). Dr. Cookson did his Urology Residency at The University of Texas in San Antonio, Texas and fellowship in Urologic Oncology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Cookson served on the faculty of the University of Kentucky before joining the Vanderbilt School of Medicine in 1998. At Vanderbilt, he rose among the ranks and was the inaugural Rodes and Patricia Hart Professor of Urologic Oncology. He had a distinguished career that included serving as the Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs in the Department of Urology and Director of the Urologic Oncology Fellowship. In 2009, Dr. Cookson earned his Master of Management in Health Care degree from the Vanderbilt's Owen Graduate School of Management. In 2013, he joined the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine where he was appointed Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urology. In 2021, he was appointed as the Chief Surgical Officer at OU Health's Stephenson Cancer Center.
An accomplished researcher and lecturer, Dr. Cookson is the author of 250 peer-reviewed journal publications and 30 chapters of various textbooks in urology and urologic surgery. He is an active member of the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons and numerous other national professional societies. He is the Past President of the Society of Urologic Oncology. He has been recognized nationally for his outstanding contributions to urologic oncology, and has been consistently named as one of the Best Doctors in America, in Who’s Who in America, and as one of America’s Top Doctors for Cancer. In 2018, he was awarded the Alumni of the Year from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine.
