Kristina Penniston is a scientist in the Department of Urology at the UW-Madison and also a registered dietitian nutritionist at the University Hospital and Clinics (part of UW Health). Dr. Penniston is a member of the team providing care in the UW Metabolic Stone Cllinic, which was established in 1995 to provide multidisciplinary medical management to patients with kidney stones. She helped to implement shared medical appointments as a new model of care for patients establishing prevention in the Stone Clinic. Kris and colleagues at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have developed an adult porcine model for studying calcium oxalate stone formation and prevneiton. Kris is also interested in the health-related quality of life of patients who form kidney stones. After documenting and reporting impaired health-related quality of life of stone forming patients and after meeting with patients to further define their issues of concern, she helped to lead the development of the Wisconsin Stone Quality of Life questionnaire, a disease-specific instrument for assessing health-related quality of life in patients with stones.
